Access to quality healthcare remains a significant challenge in underserved areas, particularly in rural communities where there are shortages of medical professionals and healthcare facilities. The World Health Organization (2024) emphasizes the importance of expanding the roles of healthcare workers, including nurse practitioners, to bridge this gap and improve healthcare accessibility in remote regions.
Nurse practitioners play a vital role in providing primary healthcare services, especially in areas where physicians are scarce. They are trained to perform patient assessments, prescribe medications, manage chronic diseases, and offer preventive healthcare education (Aliyu & Usman, 2023). Their contributions are particularly important in underserved communities, where they often serve as the primary healthcare providers, reducing reliance on overburdened hospitals in urban areas (Bello et al., 2023).
In Adamawa State, many rural communities experience significant healthcare disparities due to geographical barriers, poverty, and limited healthcare infrastructure. While nurse practitioners are actively involved in providing care, the extent of their impact in reducing these disparities remains unclear. This study aims to assess the role of NPs in bridging the healthcare gap in underserved areas of Adamawa State.
Underserved areas in Adamawa State face severe shortages of healthcare professionals, leading to preventable deaths, delayed treatments, and a high burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2023). Traditional physician-based models of care are often inadequate due to limited medical personnel, necessitating the expansion of the nurse practitioner's role.
Despite their increasing presence in rural areas, NPs may encounter barriers such as limited resources, regulatory constraints, and resistance from traditional healthcare models. Without a clear evaluation of their contributions, policymakers may fail to leverage their full potential in improving rural healthcare. This study seeks to assess how NPs are addressing healthcare disparities and the challenges they face in underserved communities.
This study will focus on selected underserved areas in Adamawa State where nurse practitioners provide primary healthcare services. Limitations may include variations in healthcare access levels and logistical challenges in data collection from remote locations.
